Letters to the Editor

Do you have something to say?  We’d love to hear from you.  Please send your (brief) letters to the editor to: editor@unorthoboxed.com

Dear Editor,

Thank you and your entire team for putting together this journal. I am proud to help support it and have been spreading the word throughout my network to advertise and support the venture.

I am reaching out with a question I have after reading the first issue. I was surprised that a magazine of, by, and for women didn’t feature any of our wonderful Maharat Rabbis in the “We Asked the Rabbi” section. Will the Rabbis be rotated to include Orthodox, female Rabbis?

I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a Shanah Tova u’Metukah!

Karolyn R. Benger

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Karolyn’s letter, we are excited to announce that Rabba Melissa Scholten-Gutierrez has joined the UNORTHOBOXED team.

Dear Editor,

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for doing what you do. I found out about UNORTHOBOXED because of Shuli Elisheva’s article and was initially planning to just read hers, but in the end, I read all of it – and it was great! I often don’t feel like there’s a place for me in Observant spaces, but this seemed like a spot where I fit; where there were people like me.

Dear Editor,

I was shocked to see a publication claiming to be “Orthodox” featuring a story about a transgender person. In general, I found your magazine to be refreshing in its coverage of topics that need to be discussed, but I did feel that the article, “Not a Nice Jewish Boy” crossed a line. The Torah makes it clear that men are not supposed to dress as a woman, nor a man lay with a man as he does with a woman. Please reconsider this column.

Editor’s Note: We understand that there are many complex halachic issues concerning transgender people, and we also understand that many people are not comfortable with the topic. We are not trying to convince anyone to believe anything about this subject, but rather, to give room for understanding the issue so that we can come from a place of understanding instead of ignorance.
