What’s Hot in Food and Cooking

Whether you are headed to the beach, on a hike or camping there are some really cool gadgets that will enhance your eating and cooking experiences while enjoying the great outdoors.

1. LifeStraw – Personal Water Filter

This could be the one thing you never want to venture out into the wilds without. Running out of potable water is an outdoors person’s worst nightmare. With the LifeStraw you are never without clean drinking water.

2. BioLite – CampStove Complete Cook Kit:

Another seriously great tool to take on your backpacking or hiking adventures. With this campstove you are able to meet all of your cooking needs and you can charge a cell phone! (Disclaimer – this item is for serious campers as it is a hefty investment)

3. Portable Fire Pit

If lounging on the beach or in your own backyard by a fire pit is more your style, then a portable fire pit is more up your alley. Solo Stove makes a line of lightweight and fully portable fire pits that have an array of cooking accessories available to go with them. Although this brand is more expensive than others, the versatility makes it worth the high price tag. A more affordable option is made by INNO STAGE. It may lack the bells and whistles of the Solo Stove model, but this is a great smokeless portable fire pit.

4. Cookware

If you will be cooking over an open fire, there are more than a few options available. Which ones you choose will depend on material preferences as well as whether or not you will need to consider the weight you will be carrying with you (such as if you are hiking with all your equipment). When portability is not an issue the best vessels to cook with over an open flame are made of cast iron. Cast iron heats evenly and over time – as it becomes well seasoned – it develops a durable stick-resistant cooking surface. There are many brands to choose from, however one of the most well known and best selling brands is Lodge. If weight is an issue there are lighter options, such as this set by Yodo that is made from hard anodized aluminum. You also want to make sure you have adequate cooking utensils. As with the cookware, there are many utensil kits available – and which you choose will depend on the space you have for transport and possibly the weight, if hiking. Two solid options are: Haplululy and this more extravagant set by Extremus.

5. Something to Sit On

Of course, there is always the option of sitting on the ground, but having a more comfortable perch is usually preferred. If you are interested in a sandless beach experience, a beach blanket that lets sand pass through may be just what you are looking for. This model from CGEAR Sandlite will keep you clean and comfortable. But, if you prefer something closer to the comforts of home, this comfy camping chair from Cliq is light and portable. Another great option is this more economical chair from Sutekus.

6. Sunscreen and Bug Repellent

It is almost always a given that outdoor events, even picnics, require a good sunscreen to protect yourself from overexposure to UV rays. There are many, many brands to choose from and you should definitely use the brand you are most comfortable with. But if you are looking for a sunscreen that is actually good for your skin, consider the Unsun hydrating full coverage body lotion with SPF 30. It’s made with natural ingredients and baobab oil that moisturizes the skin. Bugs can also be an issue in many environments and having a safe repellent is essential to enjoying yourself, especially while eating. Brands such as Badger and Murphy’s Naturals make full lines of natural bug repellents.
