A Message From Our Editor – November 2022

The days are getting shorter, the clocks are going back to standard time, and in the Northern Hemisphere the air is becoming crisp. Change is in the air. But as much as we often don’t like change, it’s a part of being human. Nothing ever stays the same. If you aren’t growing, you are dying. If you aren’t going forward, you are going backwards. In life there is no standing still.

As the planet runs through its cycle, it feels like every change of seasons is a time of renewal. It’s a time to look back at what was and to look forward at what’s ahead. This contemplative time is punctuated by the fact that in both the US and Israel it is time for elections. And in both countries there is a growing sense of hopelessness and apathy as most people feel like none of the options are good ones.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of stepping back and saying, “What’s the point?” It’s especially tempting as an entrepreneur riding the ups and downs of a new business. But then sometimes, just as you are wondering if all the effort is worth it – if you are doing anything good for the world,if you are actually making a difference –  you get sent a little reminder that you are here for a purpose and your work is not in vain.

This month our feature interview is with Dr. Leah Gniwesch, who talks about her belief that God created each and every one of us with limitless potential in order to bring good into the world. But what didn’t make it into the article was probably the most meaningful thing said during our interview – at least to me. It was a reminder that what we are doing here at UNORTHOBOXED is important, and it is indeed making a difference. She said, “Thank you for showing the world the greatness of Orthodox women in all their colors and beauty. Your work is so important because it allows so many women out there to really hold onto the Judaism that they hold dear, without cracking.” Thank you Leah, for those words of encouragement. Thank you my precious writers for creating and re-creating each month, and thank you, dear reader, because without you we would have no reason to exist.
