A Message From Our Editor
Written by Penina Taylor
Did you miss us? If you are a regular visitor to our site, you probably noticed that we did not publish a January edition of UNORTHOBOXED. It’s been quite a month in my life. In December we made plans to fly to the US from Israel to visit my mother-in-law who had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. We had no reason to believe that she wouldn’t still be alive when we returned home after our planned three-week visit. But two days before we flew out we got the news that the cancer – which had spread to her brain – had won the battle, and my mother-in-law had departed this world. Our trip, which had gone from a vacation to a good-bye visit to a funeral attendance, took up all of our time and attention. It was a difficult month.
Upon returning home my husband and I came down with Covid, which not only put me out of commission for several weeks, but is still impacting my ability to function normally. Honestly, it’s a miracle that we were able to publish this month – and that is mostly because of our devoted team of writers and our incredible copy editor – Yael Klempner.
There’s a term in the corporate world called, “one deep”. It describes an organizational structure where there is only one person in each role. Startups and other small businesses operating on shoestring budgets often have to function this way as there are not enough resources for redundancy. But this also means that if someone becomes unable to work for whatever reason, their job has to be done by someone else. And if there is no one else who can do that job, the job just doesn’t get done, regardless of how crucial it is.
Unfortunately, we are also one deep in many of the jobs required to run UNORTHOBOXED, and so when I went out of commission, things came to a halt.
But, we are back now, with an exciting new feature profile – Nina Tokayer of the Yonina singing duo, and we’ve got a bunch of great articles for you. There are also a few exciting new ideas we hope to be putting into effect in the next few months, so stay tuned and thank you for staying with us!
